Rollins translates the sound and spirit of Sonny Rollins into colour, form and structure. Rather than depicting the musician or his instrument, this abstract artwork evokes the character of his music through bold arcs, intersecting forms and a dynamic architectural composition.
Strong bands of black, orange, yellow, red, blue, purple and teal create visual rhythm and contrast. Sweeping curves move across solid geometric blocks, suggesting bridges, pathways and open spaces. The composition balances structural stability with energetic movement, while layered lines and arch-like forms introduce a sense of improvisation and forward motion.
Inspired by the energy and individuality of Sonny Rollins’s playing, Rollins combines power with lyricism, discipline with spontaneity, and graphic structure with expressive movement. The intersecting arcs subtly reference the Williamsburg Bridge, where Rollins famously practised and rethought his music.
Part of the Sound Portraits — Portraits of Musicians Without Their Faces series, this work offers a portrait of sound rather than appearance—an invitation to experience music through colour, rhythm and abstract form.
